Throughout the ages many native people around the world, our ancestors included, survived in balance with their environment meeting their needs with only the things available in the wilderness. Today we often hear about rubbing two sticks together to make fire or about some elusive plants that are edible or medicinal but the knowledge is hard to find. SLO Wanders strives to connect youth and adults with this ancient knowledge before it is lost.
Programs include wilderness living skills, naturalist studies, wildlife tracking, awareness skills, and rites-of-passage all through nature-based learning. Programs cover wild medicinal and edible plants, fire-by-friction (rubbing two sticks together) shelter building, tracking principles, awareness skills, bird language, animal and bird identification, basketry and many other wilderness living skills. Our programs are run in wilderness areas in San Luis Obispo County, California. Locations for outings are chosen based upon interests, weather and tides.
